The First Amendment: Uncensored Speech Centuries ago in American society, individuals were not granted the free will to act and speak freely. First Amendment rights allowed citizens to do so. On a historical outlook, the oppressed fought for the rights of various groups in the United States. Although laws and situations evolve, groups in America continue to face inequality and issues with freedom of speech. There is room for further improvement; freedom for all citizens needs to be fulfilled. The impression of being free is what gives the United States the ideology of being a part of a democracy. Recent events have revealed issues with freedom of speech and questioning about what kinds of speech is protected. Secondly, minorities exercise First Amendment rights when they peacefully protest on unconstitutional or immoral acts. Groups like, the Black Lives Matter advocates for justice, social equality, and equal rights groups are silenced. Opposing groups believe protest is not protected by the First Amendment (freedom of speech and assembly elements). People protest on issues that impact their culture, for example, players in the NFL have been recently protesting against the national anthem. Players are either locking arms, refusing to stand, or not showing up on the field during the anthem. Most players are refusing to stand in response to Colin Kaepernick s ban to stand during the national anthem in late August of 2016; others are boycotting in response to President Donald Trump s remarks on the league s protest. Citizens of the United States who oppose the NFL s protest- view it as a disrespect to the country and its military retirees, veterans, and the country’s fallen soldiers and find it offensive . Meanwhile, people who support the protest suggest that it is an act of freedom of expressing their First Amendment right and outcry for oppression.
